Training Models

Custom training model by KiwiMill, built for trade shows, sales, and training.

Training models we build

KiwiMill builds training models that let people learn a procedure before they touch the real equipment: valves that open, close, and come apart; rail tank cars for classroom safety training; and a penstock valve-replacement model of an underground room where the real pipe is 11 feet across.

The models work like the real thing. Turn the handwheel and the gate or ball moves, the grease ports and seals are where a technician expects them, and parts held on with magnets come apart and go back together class after class. We've built them for oil and gas maintenance crews, spent nuclear fuel handling, satellite servicing on a robotic arm, and surgical implant training.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a training model cost?

Models typically start around $6,000. Multi-model projects often run $10,000 and up. For training models, price depends on the number of working parts, whether trainees need to take it apart and reassemble it, any cutaway sections, and how many copies you need for your classrooms. A quote is free.

Will it stand up to trainees taking it apart every week?

That's what we design for. Our half-size gate valve pulls apart with magnets so its interior parts can be removed, handled, and reassembled; a shoulder implant training model is held together with threaded rod so it can be broken down and rebuilt. A training model is also lighter and easier to handle than the real equipment.

How accurate does a training model need to be?

Accurate where the procedure happens. We model the parts a trainee has to find, turn, or replace, like grease ports, seals, and the handwheel, and simplify the rest. For a penstock valve replacement, we scaled the whole room around a 6-inch tube standing in for the 11-foot pipe.

Can a cutaway show what trainees can't see in the field?

Yes. Our gate valve cutaways use red section faces and a clear tube over the threaded stem so trainees can watch it rise as the wheel turns. An underground storage tank cutaway shows owners and operators the buried parts they need to keep in compliance.
