Two lines of light run across the black base of this KiwiMill separator skid scale model, one green and one blue, tracing the path data takes from the equipment to the computer. KiwiMill built it for an industrial automation company, and the company's automation products, not the separator itself, are the real subject of the display.
The skid still had to read as real process equipment. A horizontal separator vessel with two bolted manway covers sits on a brown structural frame, topped by a yellow access platform with grated decking and handrails. A tall flanged nozzle with green overhead piping rises from one end. Blue and yellow transmitters line the top of the vessel, green control valves sit on the light blue process piping, and a pump and motor finish off the far end of the skid.
The animated lighting does the explaining:
- Underglow beneath the skid frame
- Green and blue light paths set into the base, carrying data from the skid toward the computer
- Backglow behind the automation devices, mounted on an angled gray stand
On a working skid, that flow of data is invisible, running through cables and networks no visitor ever sees. On this model, it is the first thing you notice.
