Museum dioramas and replicas we build
KiwiMill builds dioramas, historical site models, and replicas for museums, historic sites, and visitor centers. Much of the work starts with thin evidence, and the research is part of the job: a canal lock system rebuilt from a single 1840s sketch, a Civil War sternwheeler from one blurry photograph, and a 1915 brewery district from city and company archives.
Scenes are built to reward a close look, from an 11-foot longhouse replica to a 1:87 rice plantation that shows the fields through the seasons, with every figure modified by hand rather than taken off the shelf.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a museum model cost?
Models typically start around $6,000. Multi-model projects often run $10,000 and up. For museum work, price depends on the footprint and scale, how much research the subject needs, the number of figures and structures, and any interactive elements such as lighting, sound, or running water. A quote is free.
What if our historical sources are incomplete?
That's normal, and we're used to it. We've built from a single sketch, a single photograph, measurements of a surviving artifact, and on-site surveys combined with archive research. We work with your curators to decide where the record is firm and where the model has to make an informed interpretation.
Can visitors interact with the model?
Yes. We've built a refinery model that runs as part of a light and sound show explaining each step of refining, and a working hydroelectric dam that runs water through its spillway, bypass, and generator to show the public how a dam works. Interactive pieces are built so your staff can maintain them.
How long does a museum model take, and can you hit our opening date?
Most builds take 8–14 weeks. Research-heavy dioramas sit at the long end, so bring us in once the exhibit plan is set. Give us the opening date up front and we'll schedule backward from it.
Will it hold up on long-term public display, and do you ship?
Models are built for years in a gallery, with durable finishes and clear covers where visitors get close. We ship across the US and Canada and internationally, and every model travels in a Pelican or custom case.
